Sidewalks & Driveways
Your driveway and sidewalks take more daily abuse than almost any other surface on your property. Vehicle weight, foot traffic, de-icing salt and Southwestern Ontario’s freeze-thaw winters all work against poured concrete over time, which is why a driveway or walkway poured without the right base, reinforcement and finishing work rarely lasts more than a few seasons before it cracks, heaves or starts to crumble at the edges. At Texas Stone Designs, we treat every sidewalk and driveway the same way we treat a stone or masonry project: careful planning before the quote, proper prep before the pour and a finished surface built to hold up for decades, not just pass a quick visual check.
What we build and repair. Whether you’re starting from bare ground or replacing concrete that’s already failing, we handle the full scope of sidewalk and driveway work:
- New driveway pours, sized and formed to your vehicles and how you actually use the space
- New sidewalk and walkway installation, connecting your driveway, porch and entry points
- Removal and replacement of cracked, sunken or heaving concrete sections
- Driveway apron and approach work where your driveway meets the street or curb

Why the base work matters more than the pour. Most concrete failures don’t start with the concrete itself, they start with what’s underneath it. A driveway poured over an inadequate gravel base, or without proper compaction, will move as the ground beneath it shifts through our freeze-thaw cycles, and once that movement starts, cracking and heaving follow. We excavate to proper depth, compact a real gravel base and grade it correctly before a single truck of concrete shows up. From there, control joints are cut at the right spacing to manage cracking on our terms rather than the ground’s, and reinforcement, whether that’s rebar or wire mesh depending on the application, goes in before the pour, not as an afterthought. It’s the same overbuilt-for-durability approach we bring to our stone and masonry work, applied to concrete: strength first, and the clean, finished look follows naturally from doing the structural part right.
Signs your concrete needs attention. If your existing driveway or sidewalk shows any of the following, it’s worth a look before small problems turn into a full replacement:
- Cracks wider than a hairline, especially ones that keep growing year over year
- Sections that have sunk, settled or no longer sit flush with the rest of the slab
- Heaving or uneven sections caused by frost movement underneath
- Spalling or flaking on the surface, often from de-icing salt or poor original finishing
- Water pooling on the surface instead of draining away
- Trip hazards where one slab sits higher than the one beside it
What to expect from start to finish. Every project starts with an on-site look at the space, not a guess over the phone. We measure, check grading and drainage and talk through what you actually need the driveway or walkway to do before we quote a number, so there are as few surprises as possible once work begins. On pour day, we protect surrounding landscaping and hardscaping, form the space to spec and place reinforcement and control joints before any concrete arrives. Curing time depends on the weather and the size of the job, but we’ll walk you through exactly when the surface is ready for foot traffic and when it’s ready for vehicles, since rushing either one is one of the most common ways a new driveway gets damaged in its first season.
Keeping new concrete looking new. A properly poured driveway or sidewalk doesn’t need much, but a little care goes a long way in our climate. Sealing every couple of years helps concrete shed water and de-icing salt instead of absorbing it, which is one of the biggest drivers of surface flaking and premature cracking around here. We’ll walk you through a maintenance schedule that actually fits how your property gets used, rather than a generic one-size-fits-all recommendation.
